Spilling the Tea: Steeped in ResLife

Residence life professionals know that our days (and nights) are filled with intense moments that demand presence, clarity, and care. Tea, in its diverse forms, has been a quiet companion to humans for millennia, offering calm, focus, or celebration depending on what the moment calls for. Here are six varieties of tea to pair with six classic residence life experiences.

1) A Stressful Roommate Mediation? You can with chamomile tea.

There’s nothing like sitting between two residents who are ready to yell at each other over stolen leftovers, alarm clocks, or passive-aggressive sticky notes. Chamomile tea is your ally here. Its floral notes and natural sedative properties help soothe frayed nerves, lowering anxiety. Sip chamomile before or after your mediation to ground yourself in calm confidence. Let it remind you: peace is built one deep breath at a time.

2) A Long Day of RA Training? Matcha is your match.

RA training days are marathons of policies, icebreakers, and roleplays. Enter matcha: the finely milled green tea powder packed with L-theanine and caffeine, creating focused alertness without the jittery crash of coffee. Mix it into milk or oat milk for a latte that sustains your energy while keeping your mind clear enough to remember every name game.

3) You Just Finished a Week of Duty? Pep it up with Peppermint Tea.

After a full week of rounds, lockouts, and incident reports, your body and mind crave release. Peppermint tea aids digestion and relaxes tense muscles, making it the perfect choice for decompressing (McKay & Blumberg, 2006). Brew a steaming mug, inhale deeply, and let its menthol freshness mark the symbolic end of duty week. You held the community together and now it’s time to hold yourself in care.

4) You Were at an Overnight Incident but Now Have to Be at a 9 AM Meeting? Clear the clouds away with Earl Grey.

When sleep is a distant memory, but professionalism still calls, Earl Grey steps in. Its black tea base wakes you up, while bergamot’s citrus aroma provides an uplifting touch that clears the mental cobwebs. Keep a stash in your office for mornings when you’re still running on adrenaline but need to pivot to administrative clarity.

5) You Just Got Some Critical Feedback? Don’t hold on too long and have some oolong.

Feedback can sting, even when it’s constructive. Oolong tea, partially oxidized between green and black teas, symbolizes growth and transformation. Its smooth complexity reminds you that professional development is rarely linear. Sip slowly, reflect on your learning edges, and trust that every critique is a chance to refine your practice.

6) It’s May and the Residence Halls are Finally Closed?  Get Jazzed with some jasmine green tea.

There’s a special joy when move-out is complete, damage billing is done, and silence falls across the halls. Jasmine green tea is ideal for this moment – light, floral, and quietly celebratory. Let it mark the turning of the season. As you sit in your empty building with your mug, reflect on the impact you’ve made on countless students’ lives this year.

Final Steep

Tea doesn’t erase exhaustion, frustration, or overwhelm. But it does provide a pause in our demanding field. Next time you’re reaching for your mug, think about what the moment calls for. Let your tea ritual become an act of grounding and gratitude, keeping you resilient for the journey ahead. What are your go-to teas?
