100 Bullet Points RAs and Student Staff Can Use On Their Resumes

You pick up A LOT of transferable skills as an RA or student staff member. Many of these skills are useful to highlight as you apply for future jobs beyond graduation. One of the ways you’ll sell your skills and abilities to potential employers is through your resume. When crafting a resume that includes your student staff role, it’s important to create strong bullet points. Well crafted bullet points can make a significant difference in how successfully you present your skills and accomplishments. Whether it’s leadership, communication, or problem-solving, ensure that the skill is demonstrated well in the context of your job.

Here are some tips for crafting effective bullet points:

Start with Strong Action Verbs

Use action verbs to begin each bullet point. This makes your achievements sound more impactful. For example: Managed, Led, Implemented, Created, Facilitated, Coordinated, Improved, Streamlined, Developed, etc. Avoid weak verbs like “was responsible for” or “helped.”

Quantify Your Achievements

Where possible, add numbers or percentages to show the scale or impact of your work. This helps employers understand your contributions more clearly. For example: “Increased event attendance by 30% through targeted outreach.”

Focus on Results

Instead of just listing tasks, focus on the outcomes or impact of your work. How did your efforts benefit the residents, team, or institution? For example:

Before: “Organized study sessions.”

After: “Organized and facilitated weekly study sessions, improving student GPA by 10%.”

Highlight Transferable Skills

Especially for early career roles, highlight transferable skills that would be relevant to the new position. Showcase skills like communication, time management, and problem-solving.

Show Initiative

Whenever possible, highlight instances where you went above and beyond expectations. For example: “Initiated a wellness program that resulted in a 25% increase in participation from residents.”

Be Concise

Keep bullet points concise and to the point. Avoid unnecessary words or residence life jargon, and aim to make each point easy to read. A good rule of thumb is to keep each bullet point to one line.
