Congratulations to all the winners and participants in our second Roompact Door Dec Contest! There were so many creative submissions, and the decision was hard, but we’re happy to have new wall art for the 2018-2019 academic year. Here’s a little about our winning artists…

1st Place: Indigo Gaydusek

About Indigo

Indigo GaydusekI am a Resident Assistant at Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri. I am a Studio Art major concentrating in painting and minoring in sculpture and printmaking. I love making hands on artwork and door decs are no exception. I love to play my ukulele and sing. I enjoy playing any sports but especially ultimate frisbee and soccer and am a student leader of a college ministry. This means that I love sharing the hope of Jesus with others!
My favorite thing about being an RA is intentionally talking with my residents. I love when I can turn a lockout into an opportunity to make my residents day better. I love to ask how their day is going and encourage them. In addition I am so thankful that I can go through college debt-free because of my RA position.

About the Dec

Door Dec

My toucan is based off of a DIY layered paper project on Pinterest. I decided to submit the toucan because it was my own creation instead of a recreation of someone else’s. I usually make a set of door decs that fit in an overall theme but are different for each suite Door Dec(4 residents) because I like to make them unique and it’s more fun for me that way. I love taking the time to make really awesome door decs, plus my residents and co-resident assistants love them! For this set, my theme was tropical island. In addition to the toucans I made life preservers, leaves, pineapples, and sharks, among others. I use paper and an x-acto knife to build up the layers and embellish with pen.

2nd Place: Amberlyn Saw and Madeline Gossett

About Amberlyn

Amberlyn SawMy name is Amberlyn Saw and I’m a current senior at UC Berkeley double majoring in Business Administration and Molecular Environmental Biology. I’ve been a Resident Assistant for three years, and my favorite part of the job is meeting so many incredible people. From bonding with residents over Waffle Wednesdays to singing karaoke at 3 AM  with my fellow staff members, Residential Life has been a huge part of my college experience. Beyond being a RA, I love backpacking, running, baking desserts, and volunteering at a local marine mammal hospital!

About the Dec

Door Dec

I first learned how to laser cut wood from a fellow RA last year. Since then, I’ve been a huge fan of designing intricate patterns, such as recreating the Hogwarts Crest or taking photos and engraving them on wood. As a huge advocate for sustainability, I am also so excited to be part of the inaugural staff for the first LEED Gold Certified residence hall on the Berkeley campus. Thus, I wanted to highlight Berkeley’s commitment to being more eco-friendly through my door decs. I created a plant-themed succulent design in Adobe Illustrator and engraved the image onto birch wood.

About Madeline

Madeline GossettMy name is Madeline Gossett and I am a sophomore at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I’m majoring in Elementary Education and hope to get a Junior High endorsement in both Spanish and Math. When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy reading, running, being outdoors, and taking pictures.

This is my first semester being an RA, and I have enjoyed it so much thus far. My favorite part of the job is making close knit connections with others in the community.

About the DecDoor Dec

My door dec was inspired by my love for greenery. I especially love cacti because they remind me of my mom. It’s the only plant she can keep alive, but don’t tell her I said that. I’m already getting excited for my next door dec, and can’t wait to see what the rest of the semester holds for me as an RA.

3rd Place: Rachel Castevens

About Rachel

Rachel CastevensI am a Senior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) majoring in Studio Art with a New Media & Design concentration and Business minor. My favorite part about being an RA is making creative bulletin boards and door decs for my residents, and turning bland hallways into decorated passageways that lead the way to residents’ homes away from home. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, watching the Panthers play football, and eating at CookOut.

Door Dec

About the Dec

Since high school, I’ve loved watching college basketball! Last year, UNCG had an amazing basketball season, making it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 17 years! This, along with my love for the show One Tree Hill, combined to be the inspiration for my door dec creation.
